Receiving the Help You Need

What To Do As You Await Your DUI Trial

Were you recently cited and arrested for a DUI offense? If so, then waiting for your court date and trial can be a very difficult time, since it makes it difficult to plan and work for the future when you don't know what it holds. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be wasted time. Instead of putting your life on hold, do the following during this waiting period.

Set up regular appointments with your lawyer

This waiting period is an important time for you to plan your DUI defense with your lawyer. If you are pleading innocent, then these regular meetings will help you and your lawyer build the evidence to prove that you weren't under the influence. For a guilty plea, you need to spend this time developing your plea so that you receive the minimum sentence possible. This is only possible by staying in touch with your lawyer via at least once a week meetings or digital communications. Don't cancel or postpone these meetings, instead commit to attending every single one.

Enter a treatment or education program

Beginning treatment for an alcohol or drug problem, even if you don't currently think you have one, can help minimize your sentence in the event of a guilty plea. Consider an outpatient program and commit to following it completely. Sometimes a judge will even consider a treatment program in lieu of time served, which can help you avoid jail. At a bare minimum, entering treatment shows the court you are willing to work to avoid any future DUIs.

Maintain your responsibilities

If you have a job, are going to school, or have other outside responsibilities, make sure you maintain perfect attendance and performance as you await trial. You want to show the court that you are normally a responsible and contributing member of society. As a side benefit, you will be well on the way to rebuilding your life once the DUI is behind you if you maintain your responsibilities now. If you are currently unemployed, consider volunteering somewhere until you can find employment.

Choose wise recreational pursuits

Don't be tempted to party it up because you are afraid you will end up in jail. Facebook photos of you drunk or even holding a beer or drug paraphernalia can and will be used against you in court. You may also have to undergo drug and alcohol testing in the weeks leading up to trial. Further, a second DUI while awaiting trial for the first virtually guarantees jail time and extensive fines. Instead, opt to spend your recreational time well away from drugs and alcohol, as well as anyone else that is partaking, until your case has been settled.
